Your first consultation with us will take between 45 and 60 minutes.
Your Osteopath will need to take a full case history, including presenting complaint, existing medical conditions, work and leisure activities and examine the affected area.
At the start of your first appointment, your osteopath will ask you questions about your medical history and lifestyle, as well any symptoms you may be experiencing. This is very important as it will help them to make an accurate diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment. It is natural to worry about what maybe causing your symptoms and your osteopath will always discuss your concerns as part of your consultation.
You are welcome to bring a chaperone with you to any of your appointments.
Your osteopath will need to examine the area(s) of your body causing discomfort. Sometimes the cause of the problem may be in a different area to the pain, (for example, pain in your lower arm may be linked to the nerves in your neck) so they may need to examine different areas. They will explain what they are doing as they go along.
If needed, further medical testing may be required such as neurological and orthopaedic testing. At the end of your examination your osteopath will discuss treatment options with you, to jointly decide upon an appropriate treatment plan you feel comfortable with. You are encouraged to ask as many questions as you need throughout the appointment
You may be asked to stand, and perform some simple movements while your osteopath stands behind or in front of you to observe how your spine and / or joints move and to identify any problems.
Treatment will normaly be commenced at your first visit along with advice regarding preventative measures and exercises if appropriate
Please wear loose and comfortable clothing. It may be necessary to remove some clothing to allow examination of the affected area.
Our immediate aim is to relieve your symptoms and reduce your pain as quickly as possible. You may require further treatment to get to the root of the problem and prevent symptoms recurring in the future. Your Osteopath will always explain the treatment to you.
